Let's talk about Spring Decluttering

Master the Art of Spring Cleaning

(We published same blogpost in our original blog: www.glowngreen.com)

Spring is finally here! We have been drenching ourselves in the rain for quite some time in the bay area. We forgot what the sunshine looks like, but we know! And it's that time of year when we all think about doing spring cleaning. I am working on many aspects of spring cleaning, and let me tell you, I am still far from the finish line. But I divided myself in terms of spring cleaning in this way:

  1. Wellness/Skincare Spring Clean up
  2. Personal Spring Cleanup (consists of a wardrobe, kitchen, kid's closet etc.)
  3. Green-Beauty Co inventory Cleanup

(Let me know your game plan!)

But instead of giving you tips for spring cleaning straight up, let's talk about the psychology of spring cleaning.

 Psychology of Spring Cleaning:

Every year as winter draws to a close and the first buds of spring appear, many people are inspired to declutter their living spaces and embark on their annual spring cleaning routines. The psychology of spring cleaning is a fascinating spectrum of cognitive clarity, stress reduction, enhanced mood, and the benefits of decluttering. Understanding these key psychological concepts is instrumental in maximizing the positive impact of this age-old practice.

  • Cognitive Clarity: When our surroundings are organized, clean, and clutter-free, our minds often experience a similar state of clarity. This phenomenon occurs because our brains are intimately connected to our environment. Decluttered spaces allow for increased focus and creative thinking. Our cognitive resources are not unconsciously devoted to processing unnecessary stimuli. Moreover, an orderly environment helps us to locate items more efficiently, freeing up time and energy for more productive pursuits.
  • Stress Reduction: There is a strong correlation between mess and stress. Living in a cluttered and disorganized space can make us feel overwhelmed, anxious, and even depressed. Spring cleaning helps to alleviate stress by systemically tackling disarray and creating a sense of calm and order. This, in turn, promotes relaxation, emotional well-being, and mental resilience. It's no wonder that many people find the cleaning process therapeutic, as it provides a cathartic release from the pressures of everyday life.
  • Enhanced Mood: Not only can spring cleaning reduce stress, but it can also actively improve our mood. Eliminating dust, dirt, and allergens fosters a healthier living environment conducive to overall well-being. Furthermore, the physical act of cleaning can serve as a form of exercise, encouraging the release of endorphins, our body's "feel-good" hormones. Additionally, completing a thorough clean generates a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, bolsters self-esteem, and promotes a positive mindset.
  • Decluttering: The process of decluttering can be transformative not only for our physical space but also for our mental and emotional well-being. We can foster a sense of control over our environment by systematically discarding items that no longer serve us and organizing our possessions. This mastery helps to reduce feelings of chaos and disarray and, consequently, results in a heightened sense of inner peace, balance, and stability. Furthermore, decluttering can teach us valuable lessons about materialism and detachment as we let go of things that no longer hold meaning while making space for new experiences and growth.
  •   In conclusion, spring cleaning is more than a simple household chore; it's a powerful tool for fostering cognitive clarity, stress reduction, enhanced mood, and decluttering. Engaging in this ritual can cultivate a sense of order, control, and balance in our lives, leading to improved mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

Here are the Top 10 Sustainable Tips for Spring Cleaning:

  • Use natural cleaning products: Choose products made with natural, non-toxic ingredients to reduce exposure to harmful chemicals and lessen your environmental impact.
  • Cut down on paper towels: Swap paper towels for reusable cleaning cloths or rags. Not only will you reduce waste, but you'll save money on paper products over time.
  • Donate and recycle: Instead of throwing away items you no longer need or want, donate them to a local charity or recycle them to give them new life.
  •  Use a steam cleaner: Steam cleaners are eco-friendly to clean tough surfaces, like kitchen and bathroom tiles, without harsh chemicals.
  • Make your own cleaning solutions: Use household items like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice instead of purchasing new cleaners.
  • Shop secondhand: Rather than buying new organization or storage items, try shopping secondhand at thrift stores or online marketplaces to find gently used items at a lower cost.
  • Reduce water usage: Use a bucket of soapy water and a cloth to clean surfaces instead of constantly running the faucet. You can also collect and reuse this water to water plants or do laundry.
  • Avoid disposable plastic: Opt for reusable cleaning tools like bamboo scrub brushes or silicone sponges instead of using disposable plastic items that contribute to waste.
  • Air dry items: Instead of using a dryer to dry linens and clothing, utilize the sun and fresh air to reduce energy consumption.
  • Clean, sustainably year-round: Maintain a clean and organized home with sustainable practices year-round by reducing waste and using eco-friendly products whenever possible.

Here are the Top 10 Tips for Sustainable Skincare Routine:

  • Use natural and organic products: Choose skincare products made with natural, organic ingredients to reduce exposure to harmful chemicals and lessen your environmental impact.
  •  Choose recyclable packaging: Opt for products that come in recyclable packaging or choose refillable, reusable containers to minimize waste and reduce your carbon footprint.
  • Use less water: Be aware of your water usage by washing your face using a basin rather than leaving the tap running. You can also use a water-saving showerhead.
  • DIY Skincare: Make your face masks using natural ingredients such as honey, oatmeal, and yogurt. It saves money and benefits both the skin and the environment.
  • Invest in multi-purpose products: Look for products that can serve multiple purposes. These products can save money, reduce clutter, and reduce carbon footprint.
  • Use reusable face cloths: Instead of disposable face wipes or cotton pads, opt for reusable cloths to remove makeup and cleanse your face.
  •  Choose cruelty-free brands: Support cruelty-free brands that do not test on animals. It's better for the environment and animal welfare.
  •  Regularly clean your makeup tools: Keep your brushes and sponges clean and hygienic by washing them regularly. This will prolong their life, save them money, and minimize waste.
  •  Sustainable Exfoliation: Minimize single-use exfoliating scrubs and instead look for reusable and eco-friendly options such as face brushes or natural sponges.
  •  Sustainable sun protection: Opt for natural sunscreen protection.
