Understanding the Connection Between PCOS and Skincare: My Holistic Journey to Managing Hormonal Acne
Share
Today, I want to share a very personal story with you—my journey with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and how it led me to discover the power of holistic skincare. yes, besides unexplained infertility I also dealt with this too. Although I was too young, and I didn't believe in holistic lifestyle but slowly, I can totally relate with all these~ If you’re struggling with hormonal acne or other PCOS-related skin issues, I hope my story can offer you some hope, guidance, and maybe even a little inspiration.
My PCOS Journey: Battling Hormonal Acne
When I was first diagnosed with PCOS, I was overwhelmed. PCOS brings with it a whole host of symptoms—irregular periods, unexpected weight gain, and for me, the most heartbreaking of all, hormonal acne. I had always taken great care of my skin, so when deep, painful cystic acne began appearing along my jawline and neck, I felt like I was losing a part of myself.
I tried everything—over-the-counter acne treatments, prescription medications, and even some harsh skincare routines that promised quick results. But nothing worked. The acne was stubborn, persistent, and it felt like it was here to stay. Every morning, I’d look in the mirror and see new breakouts, and with each one, my confidence took a hit.
It was frustrating, disheartening, and at times, it felt hopeless. But I knew there had to be a better way—a way that didn’t involve damaging my skin with harsh chemicals or treating only the surface of the problem. I needed to get to the root of it.
Understanding the Hormonal Connection
Through research and my own experience, I learned that PCOS causes an increase in androgens—male hormones like testosterone—in the body. These elevated hormone levels trigger the sebaceous glands to produce excess oil, which clogs pores and leads to the kind of deep, painful acne I was dealing with.
This was my “aha” moment. I realized that if I wanted to manage my acne, I couldn’t just focus on my skin—I needed to address the hormonal imbalances that were causing it. This realization led me down a path of holistic healing, where I began to explore how I could care for my entire body, not just my skin.
My Holistic Skincare Routine: A Shift to Balance
The first step in my journey was rethinking my skincare routine. I knew I needed to move away from harsh products and embrace a gentler, more natural approach—one that aligned with the Ayurvedic principles I grew up with and believed in.
-
Gentle Cleansing: I started by ditching the harsh, sulfate-laden cleansers that were stripping my skin of its natural oils, causing it to produce even more oil in response. I switched to a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser that removed impurities without disrupting my skin’s delicate balance. After infertility, I totally changed my cleansing game with Ingredients like neem and turmeric. These became my daily companions, offering soothing and purifying benefits that helped calm my irritated skin. Check out Neem Soap

Mindful Exfoliation: Exfoliation had always been a tricky area for me. Physical scrubs were too abrasive, especially for my sensitive, acne-prone skin. So, I switched to enzyme-based exfoliators that gently dissolved dead skin cells without causing irritation. Papaya and yogurt (which is lactic acid) were my heroes—they provided the exfoliation I needed without the harshness that my skin couldn’t handle.
-
Lightweight Moisturization: Even with combination skin, I knew that moisturizing was essential. But instead of heavy creams that clogged my pores, I opted for lightweight, non-comedogenic oils like jojoba and apricot kernel oil (gatte ka oil). These oils closely mimic the skin’s natural sebum, helping to balance oil production while keeping my skin hydrated and nourished. Our Supercharge Serum was my hero products although it contains Vitamin A Retinol but it's perfectly alright to use it in AM time as well.
-
Embracing Ayurvedic Ingredients: Growing up, I’d always heard about the healing power of turmeric, and now it was time to put it to the test. I began incorporating turmeric into my skincare routine through masks and spot treatments. Its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties helped reduce redness and breakouts, bringing much-needed relief to my skin.
Embracing Ayurveda: Healing from Within
But I knew skincare alone wasn’t enough. PCOS is a complex condition that affects your entire body, and to truly heal, I needed to take a holistic approach. That’s when I turned to Ayurveda—the ancient Indian system of medicine that views health as a balance between the body, mind, and spirit.
In Ayurveda, PCOS is often linked to an imbalance in the kapha and pitta doshas, which can manifest as oily skin, inflammation, and acne. To bring these doshas back into harmony, I began incorporating Ayurvedic practices into my daily life:
-
Nourishing Diet: Ayurveda taught me that proper digestion is key to overall health, including hormonal balance. I focused on a diet rich in warming, easily digestible foods like cooked vegetables, whole grains, and spices such as ginger and turmeric. I also made a conscious effort to avoid cold, heavy, and greasy foods, which can aggravate kapha and lead to increased oil production.
-
Herbal Support: Ayurvedic herbs became an essential part of my routine. Ashwagandha helped me manage stress and balance cortisol levels, while shatavari supported my hormonal health. Neem, with its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, was particularly beneficial for my skin. These herbs not only helped balance my hormones but also supported my overall well-being.
-
Daily Rituals: Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of daily routines (dinacharya) to maintain balance. I began practicing abhyanga, a form of self-massage with warm oil, to stimulate circulation and detoxify my body. Pranayama, or controlled breathing exercises, became a daily practice to calm my mind and reduce stress, which I knew could exacerbate my hormonal imbalances.
Supporting My Skin from Within
I quickly realized that true skincare starts from within. By making significant changes to my diet and lifestyle, I was able to support my body’s natural healing processes:
-
Staying Hydrated: Hydration became a priority for me. I made sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day, and I also incorporated herbal teas like spearmint and dandelion. Spearmint tea helped reduce androgen levels, while dandelion supported liver detoxification, which in turn improved my skin health.
-
Balanced Nutrition: I focused on a diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods to support my skin from the inside out. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids became staples in my meals. I particularly relied on flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts, which are known for their hormone-balancing properties and ability to reduce inflammation.
-
Managing Stress: I knew that stress was a major trigger for my hormonal imbalances and acne, so I made stress management a priority. Yoga, meditation, and mindfulness became integral parts of my daily routine. Specific yoga poses that targeted the endocrine system, like forward bends and twists, were particularly helpful in maintaining my hormonal balance and improving my skin.
Seeking Holistic Help: Combining Ayurveda and Conventional Care
Despite all the progress I was making with my holistic approach, I knew I couldn’t do it all on my own. I sought guidance from an Ayurvedic practitioner who provided personalized advice based on my unique dosha constitution. This personalized approach helped me address the root causes of my hormonal acne and supported my overall health.
I also found that combining Ayurvedic practices with conventional treatments was the most effective way to manage my PCOS. Ayurvedic herbs like shatavari and turmeric complemented the hormonal treatments prescribed by my doctor. By integrating both approaches, I was able to manage my symptoms more effectively and achieve long-term results.
