Ritucharya and the Female Cycle: How Ayurvedic Seasonal Living Supports Hormone Health
As women, our bodies are intricately connected to the rhythms of nature. From the gentle waxing and waning of the moon to the seasonal shifts in weather and energy, Ayurveda teaches us that we are not separate from these cycles—we are these cycles. And yet, modern life often pulls us away from this deep wisdom.
Through my own hormonal struggles and eventual healing journey rooted in Ayurveda, I discovered that seasonal living—Ritucharya—was one of the most grounding, nurturing, and hormone-friendly frameworks I had ever experienced.
In this blog, I want to gently walk you through what Ritucharya is, how it mirrors our own female hormonal cycles, and how you can adapt your self-care and lifestyle in tune with the seasons to experience more stable moods, clearer skin, balanced hormones, and a deeper connection with your own body.
What Is Ritucharya?
In Ayurveda, Ritu means season and Charya means regimen or lifestyle. Ritucharya refers to the ancient Ayurvedic practice of aligning your diet, lifestyle, and self-care routines with the qualities of each season. The purpose of Ritucharya is to maintain internal balance as the external environment changes.
Each season carries different qualities—hot, dry, damp, heavy, cold, etc.—and those qualities influence the doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) within us. When we ignore these changes and continue living with the same routine year-round, it can create imbalance, particularly in our hormonal systems which are already sensitive to environmental stressors.
The Female Cycle as a Micro-Seasonal Journey
As women, we undergo a hormonal cycle every 28–32 days—a sacred rhythm that Ayurveda likens to the lunar cycle and even to the broader seasonal rhythms of the year. Here’s a beautiful Ayurvedic analogy:
-
Menstrual phase = Winter (Kapha-Vata): inward, reflective, slow
-
Follicular phase = Spring (Kapha): creative, fertile, growing
-
Ovulatory phase = Summer (Pitta): fiery, energetic, expressive
-
Luteal phase = Fall (Vata-Pitta): introspective, changing, preparing
Once I started to see my monthly cycle as a smaller version of the seasons, it transformed the way I approached everything—my food, movement, skincare, and even my business tasks. Now let’s explore how each Ayurvedic season (Ritu) affects our hormones and how we can support ourselves.
🌱 Spring (Vasanta Ritu): Cleansing and Awakening Kapha
Hormonal Focus: Estrogen dominance often shows up in this season due to sluggish detox pathways. Bloating, PMS, heavy periods, and breast tenderness may flare up.
Ayurvedic Tips:
-
Incorporate bitter and astringent greens like dandelion, fenugreek, and neem.
-
Favor light, warm foods like mung dal khichadi and steamed veggies.
-
Practice dry brushing and tongue scraping to clear toxins (ama).
-
Move your body daily—brisk walks, gentle yoga, or dancing to move stagnation.
Skincare Adjustments:
Use lightweight cleansers (like chickpea flour with tulsi) and herbal steam to open up the skin. Avoid heavy oils in this season.
☀️ Summer (Grishma Ritu): Cooling Pitta and Replenishing Fluids
Hormonal Focus: Excess heat can lead to hormonal acne, mood swings around ovulation, and increased PMS symptoms. It can also dehydrate the body, affecting cervical mucus and fertility.
Ayurvedic Tips:
-
Eat cooling foods like coconut, cucumber, rose, watermelon, and aloe vera.
-
Avoid spicy, fermented, and acidic foods that stoke Pitta.
-
Practice moon salutations and meditation to cool the mind.
-
Sip on cooling infusions like mint-fennel-coriander tea.
Skincare Adjustments:
Apply sandalwood paste, rose water, or aloe-based serums. Ghee-based deodorants and lip balms (like ours at Green-Beauty Co) are especially soothing during this time.
🌧️ Monsoon (Varsha Ritu): Pacifying Vata and Supporting Digestion
Hormonal Focus: Irregular periods, constipation, anxiety, and bloating are common due to Vata disturbance. This is a season to deeply nourish and restore.
Ayurvedic Tips:
-
Favor warm, cooked foods with digestive spices like cumin, ginger, and hing.
-
Eat regularly, avoiding raw or cold meals.
-
Ground yourself with oil massages (abhyanga) using sesame or ghee oil.
-
Keep routines stable—wake, eat, and sleep at the same times daily.
Skincare Adjustments:
Moisturize more frequently with heavier oils like sesame or ghee. Use calming masks with turmeric and yogurt to reduce sensitivity.
🍂 Autumn (Sharad Ritu): Calming Transitions and Protecting Hormones
Hormonal Focus: This is the premenstrual time in the female cycle analogy. Emotional fluctuations and heightened sensitivity are normal but can be softened with mindful care.
Ayurvedic Tips:
-
Increase healthy fats (ghee, flaxseed, soaked almonds) to nourish hormones.
-
Add warming, grounding meals with seasonal veggies and root herbs.
-
Journal, rest, and protect your nervous system from overstimulation.
-
Shatavari, ashwagandha, and Brahmi can be supportive when guided by a practitioner.
Skincare Adjustments:
Use calming herbal masks (gotu kola, manjistha, rose) and massage your face with ghee or almond oil to reduce inflammation and dryness.
❄️ Winter (Hemanta Ritu): Nourishing Deeply and Menstrual Rest
Hormonal Focus: This is the menstrual phase, a time of rest and replenishment. When we align with this energy, we experience greater resilience and hormone harmony. Skipping rest or pushing too hard can create cycle irregularities and low progesterone.
Ayurvedic Tips:
-
Indulge in warm soups, ghee-laced khichadi, and root vegetables.
-
Practice abhyanga daily with warm sesame oil or medicated ghee oils.
-
Sleep more. Hibernate like nature. Reflect inward.
-
Use herbs like dashamoola and triphala to support elimination and balance Vata.
Skincare Adjustments:
Use rich balms, ghee-based serums, and deeply hydrating face masks. Avoid over-cleansing or drying ingredients.
✨ Restore Balm Ritual for Period Comfort
One of the most supportive tools during winter and menstruation is our Restore Balm. Created with Ayurvedic wisdom and no more than 10 non-toxic ingredients, it’s formulated to soothe cramping muscles, ease lower back tension, and bring comfort during painful periods.
The balm combines warming botanicals that stimulate gentle circulation with calming oils and ghee that reduce inflammation. For a simple ritual: massage a small amount of Restore Balm onto your lower abdomen or back, then place a warm compress or hot water bottle on top. This transforms period discomfort into a moment of self-care, honoring your body’s natural call for rest and warmth.
Coming Back to Nature, Coming Back to Yourself
The more I work with women, the more I realize that true hormonal health doesn’t come from fighting our bodies or forcing strict routines—it comes from listening. And Ayurveda, with its beautiful lens of Ritucharya, invites us to listen to nature first.
If the leaves are falling, maybe you need to let go. If the sun is hot, maybe you need to soften and cool. If the soil is dormant, maybe you’re meant to rest.
When you start aligning your routines—what you eat, how you move, how you rest—with the seasonal flow, your hormones respond with gratitude. Your skin clears. Your mood stabilizes. Your period becomes a time of reverence, not dread.
This is what Ayurveda taught me, and what I now bring into every product and ritual at Green-Beauty Co. Because when we remember we are nature, we remember how to heal.
